What is Relamping?

Projector lamp relamping is the act of replacing the burner that sits inside the quartz globe of the lamp. Relampers will typically hollow out the ceramic base holding the old burner in place and then place a new burner inside, setting it in place with extra strength caulking.

Why is Relamping Dangerous for my Projector?

1. Burners cannot be purchased from any of the major, globally recognized projector lamp manufacturers and are often obtained from companies that have not put the millions of dollars of research required to develop quality projector lamp parts. As a result, the quality of these burners is often poor and lamp life is often limited to under 400 hours. In fact, a relamped projector lamp will usually start to lose its brightness after only 200 hours of use.

2. The angle that the burner is set into the existing quartz globe must be exact and often is not done correctly. If the angle of the burner is off by even a fraction it can cause the projector lamp to burn brighter and hotter in certain places. If a projector lamp burns too hot on your LCD panel it can cause blue, red or green sections to start to appear on your projector's image. This phenomenon often indicates permanant damage to the LCD panel.

3. Mercury leakage. Projector lamps operate by igniting ultra-high pressurized mercury vapor across an ARC gap. When you purchase relamped projector lamps, you are essentially buying to have a poor quality burner replaced inside your lamp. Unfortunately, these low-grade burners do not adhere to the strict safety regulations enforced upon major projector lamp manufacturers and leakage does occur. The leakage of mercury is what causes brightness to fade and lamp life to be shortened with the relamped service. It is important to keep in mind that mercury is potentially harmful to your health and can corrode the equipment inside your projector.
